They choose: Statement (2) alone is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not.
That's the textbook answer. And it's worth 1 point. But on harder Data Sufficiency problems—the ones that separate 160+ scores from 155 scores—the same logic gets you destroyed. Because you're not asking the right question.
The right question isn't "Can I solve for x?" It's "Does the statement force a single answer to the question being asked?"
In that simple example, both statements do. But when you hit a problem like this:
Question: What is the value of m?
(1) m is a prime number between 10 and 20
(2) m is divisible by 3
Most tutees jump to "statement (1) gives us m ∈ {11, 13, 17, 19}, so (1) is insufficient." They're right. But they stop analyzing. They don't check: what if we combine them? m must be prime AND divisible by 3. The only prime divisible by 3 is 3 itself—and 3 isn't between 10 and 20. So both statements together still don't uniquely determine m.
A GRE quant tutor worth their time drills this habit: Always test the combination. Don't assume "insufficient + insufficient = insufficient." The test writes questions where combining two weak clues creates a contradiction that's the actual answer.

Then they hit Q162+ and their speed becomes a liability.

A worker is paid $20 per hour. After working h hours, if she worked 5 more hours, she would have earned $150 more. What is h?
The equation is trivial: 20(h + 5) = 20h + 150 → 100 = 150. This doesn't work.
The trap? Most students recalculate. They think they made an error. They redo the algebra three times. They're burning 2 minutes on a problem that was designed to teach you something: not all word problems have solutions in the domain you expect.
A student who rushed through and got an algebraic contradiction, then paused to think about what that means, would recognize the answer is "the scenario is impossible" or "there is no valid value of h."
