- (E) Neither statement alone nor together is sufficient
Your job is to decide which bucket the problem falls into. Not to solve it. Not to find x or y or the probability or the area.
This distinction is *critical*. When I work with students one-on-one, I see them instinctively trying to solve. They're halfway through algebra when I ask, "Do you actually need to finish that?" And they freeze. They do need to finish—in their head. The reflex is too strong.
Data Sufficiency is testing your ability to manage ambiguity and scope out what information is necessary versus nice-to-have. That's a real skill. It's also the reason your score won't budge if you keep treating Data Sufficiency like Problem Solving with an open-ended answer.
The Framework That Actually Works
Here's the approach a private GMAT tutor online should teach you. Stop trying to solve. Start asking three questions:
- Do I need both statements, or can one of them alone do the job? Test statement (1) in isolation. If it gives you enough information, (1) is sufficient. If it doesn't, move to (2). If (2) works alone, answer (B). If neither works alone but together they do, answer (C).
- What counts as "sufficient"? Sufficient means you could *determine a unique value or answer* if you wanted to, not that you've actually calculated it. For example: "x + y = 10" and "x = 3" together are sufficient to know y = 7, even if you don't write it out.
- What's the trap in the numbers? When a statement looks insufficient, test whether *two different scenarios* are possible. If statement (1) says "x is even," you can't determine whether x = 2 or x = 4 from that alone. So (1) is insufficient. You need another constraint to lock down the answer.
I drill this with every student I tutor. The students who break 700 on Quant are the ones who stop mid-calculation and ask themselves, "Do I actually need to keep going?" Nine times out of ten, they don't.
The Scoring Reality
Here's why this matters for your overall GMAT score. The exam is section-adaptive. Your Quantitative Reasoning score is built question-by-question based on difficulty and whether you got it right. Data Sufficiency questions, especially in the harder tiers, carry disproportionate weight. Miss one when you're in the 48+ difficulty range, and your final Quant score takes a real hit. Miss a Problem Solving question at the same difficulty? Same impact. But there are fewer Data Sufficiency questions to practice, so you're more likely to encounter one when you're unprepared.
A student aiming for a 700+ needs to treat Data Sufficiency as its own discipline, not as a Problem Solving variant. That's the gap I see most often in students who work through apps alone.
What You Actually Need to Practice
Don't practice Data Sufficiency by doing 50 questions in a row. Practice by *reverse-engineering* why each answer choice is correct or incorrect. Read the right answer. Rewind. Can you explain why statement (1) alone isn't sufficient without solving the whole problem? That's the skill.
Also: get comfortable saying "I don't know yet." On Data Sufficiency, not knowing is often the point. You don't need to know whether x is 2 or 4. You just need to know whether the given information forces x into one box or leaves it in two. That mindset shift is half the battle.
