SAT preparation in Doha: join independent clauses correctly
A punctuation question becomes clearer when you identify the clauses before judging the punctuation. An independent clause can stand as a sentence because it expresses a complete thought with its own subject and verb.
Sentence boundaries belong to the SAT’s Standard English Conventions domain. Students preparing in Doha use the same rules and test content as students elsewhere; a city does not create a separate grammar syllabus or score threshold.
Find the boundary in this original example
The samples arrived late, the analysis began the next day.
“The samples arrived late” can stand alone. So can “the analysis began the next day”. A comma by itself does not correctly join these two independent clauses in Standard English. The sentence contains a comma splice.
Three possible repairs
- Two sentences: The samples arrived late. The analysis began the next day.
- A semicolon: The samples arrived late; the analysis began the next day.
- A comma and coordinating conjunction: The samples arrived late, and the analysis began the next day.
All three are grammatical repairs of this teaching example. The correct choice in a multiple-choice question depends on the full sentence and the options supplied. Do not learn the false rule that commas can never appear between independent clauses; the conjunction matters.
“However” is not a coordinating conjunction
Consider another original example: “The samples arrived late; however, the analysis finished on time.” The semicolon separates the two independent clauses, and the comma follows the transition “however”.
Replacing the semicolon with a comma would not repair the boundary merely because “however” is present. A period would also be possible: “The samples arrived late. However, the analysis finished on time.”
Review the structure, then the meaning
- Locate the subjects and verbs.
- Check whether each side can stand alone.
- Identify any conjunction or transition.
- Choose punctuation that fits the clauses and preserves the intended relationship.
Use fresh examples to check the rule after learning it. Not every punctuation question contains two independent clauses: fragments, introductory phrases and lists require different analysis. Explain why the actual options work or fail instead of labelling every comma an error.
